There are many examples of christian religious imagery. There are depictions of life after death. There is a scene of a person with a halo of light above them which has become a popular symbol of either life after death or in some cases angles. The movie regularly juxtaposes good and evil. The primary antagonist offers the dead mans girl friend apples a Christian symbol of temptation. There is an example of giving money to charity. Literally as the people who committed or plotted murder die they are dragged off to hell. The protagonist is shown being confronted with a white light to walk into. Sam actually expresses sorrow when he sees the person responsible for his death being dragged to hell. There is also an example in Whoopi Goldberg’s character of someone who communicates with spirits.

Michele’s Post

Ghost is a movie that has a lot of religious notes to it. The one that is present the most is that when we die we still have a strong connection to the love ones we leave behind.  That is, we still have work to do when we die so that are spirits can stay on Earth until we have done what we need to do. We see this as Patrick Swayze’s character stays with her after he dies. It also points out that good people go to heaven and its waiting for him, but he is still on Earth because he and his wife can’t let go. Which is why someone who can see ghosts can see him and is trying to help him cross over to where he belongs. She is trying to help him, help her so they can both move on.   In some religious groups that is what they are told. That some people stay behind after they die and some people move into the light as they say.

Emilee:
The film Ghost depicts a scenario where the spirit can remain on earth after the physical body has demised. Many people like to believe in the existence of ghosts. However, this movie is contradictory to the traditional Christian belief system. From the religious view point of a Christian, there is no such thing as ghost but many believe that demons will take the form of a person’s loved ones. One theory is that this could disenchant a person about their Christian world view. Basically Christians believe that there is only demonic activity under the guise of ghost like activity. In the bible, Leviticus 19:13 states “Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them”. “Necromancers” refers to people who communicate with demon spirits. Leviticus 20:6 says “If a person turns to mediums and necromancers, whoring after them, vI will set my face against that person and will cut him off from among his people” This appears to make it pretty clear that those who engage in “black magic”, are cutting themselves off from God.
